Woodland Study | 2021
'Woodland Study' | Recycled Paper, Wire and Thread | 34cm x 34cm x 5cm | 2021.
A life size study of winter finds I collected from a woodland local to me here in Wales. It includes a Hazel branch with Catkins, an Amethyst Deceiver Fungi, Fairy Cup Lichen and Oak Moss Lichen.
The fungi has been hand carved from old book pages and covered with recycled tissue paper to create the cap and gills. The stalk is made from paper mache and the whole thing painted with water colours to create a more realistic and vibrant colour.
To create the lichen I hand cut the lichens strands from old book pages before attaching them together and fanning out the ends using twezzers. The Hazel branch is made from wire and an old paper bag with the catkins being carved from rolls of paper and wrapped in paper strips that were painted and hand cut to create the tiny ridges.
The frames are handmade for each display from solid wood and glass. This particular frame has been made from Ash wood and lightly oiled. It has a wire on the back so it is ready to hang when it arrives.
In order to keep your piece looking its best, hang it away from direct sunlight and avoid areas where there is a lot of moisture such as in a bathroom.
