'Introduction to British Botany vii'
Introduction to British Botany vii | Recycled Paper, Wire and Thread | 34cm x 34cm x 4cm | 2019.
A life size study of plant specimens and Butterflies commonly found in the hedges and verges of the Welsh Borders. The plants include Lady's Smock and a Forget-me-not and the butterflies are a Painted Lady and an Orange-Tip.
The flowers petals are hand cut from recycled paper and then painted with water colours (if necessary) and shaped. I attach each one individually to the flower head once ready. The stamen are made from either wire or thread and are bound to the stem before the petals and sepels are attached. The stems are then bound with thread and bound together to form the shape of the plant. The leaves are then attached, some of which will have their veins hand stitched into the paper.
The butterflies wing are cut from recycled paper and their patterns and veins are hand embroidered before being attached to the body which is carved from a roll of paper and painted.
The frames are handmade for each display from solid wood and glass. This particular frame has been made from Ash wood and lightly oiled. It has a wire on the back so it will hang from a wall or can stand on a shelf or mantel piece.
