Birdwings | Recycled Paper, Wire and Thread | 26cm x 24cm x 5cm | 2019.

A life size study of an Ornithoptera chimaera, a birdwing butterfly from the Papilionidae family. It is found in the mountain areas of Papua New Guinea, 1000 meters above sea level.

The wings have been cut from the pages of an old catalogue and hand embroidered to create the details in its veins and patterns. The body was carved from a roll of paper and painted, before the wings and antenna were attached.

The frames are handmade for each display from solid wood and glass. This particular frame has been made from Oak which has been oxidised to create the dark colouring and then oiled. It has a wire on the back so it will hang from a wall or can stand on a shelf or mantel piece.
